AFRAA Secretary General, Mr Abderahmane Berthé, at the Airlines Association of Southern Africa AGM on 18 October 2024 in Cape Town – South Africa, made an intervention during a panel session themed: Industry Insights: Unlocking Potentialities of Aviation. He made emphasis on the need for preparedness of the continent to harness the growth opportunities and hasten implementation of various initiatives for a sustainable air transport sector in Africa.
“As the traffic in Africa is expected to double in 15 years, we need to be prepared through training of aviation professionals, focusing on safety enhancement. We are largely aware of the solutions needed to create a conducive operating environment for aviation to thrive in Africa, the main challenge is the slow pace of decision-making that is pulling back the implementation of various initiatives.” Mr Berthé stated.The panel focused on the following areas:
1. Growing safer, reliable affordable intra-Africa connectivity and routes to/from Africa.
2. Various aviation stakeholders’ role and contributions at policy level, oversight and operations for sustainable air transport in Africa.
3. A review of progress developments from 1 year ago to date and expected milestones in the short-medium term.
4. Collaboration and consolidation.
5. The implementation of SAATM as an opportunity.
6. Aviation training: What is the strategy? Meeting the Management skills needs.
7. Enhancement of aviation Safety in Africa.
